On Thursday, February 4th, I stood and listened to the President of the United States speaking a mere couple hundred feet from me. It wasn’t the first time I heard President Obama speak, and I hope it won’t be the last, but the form and timing of this event was particularly meaningful to me.
I became involved in the Obama campaign almost exactly three years ago—the week of the announcement in fact. There was Senator Obama. I saw in him a promise: of someone who could inspire the nation to tackle the longstanding challenges we faced and someone who was interested in engaging everyday Americans in that journey. Standing in that ballroom earlier this month, I saw that promise fulfilled.
As I looked around, there were people, young and old, black and white, rich and those of more modest means. There were folks who had been involved in politics for years, and others who had gotten involved for the first time during the campaign.
I listened to President Obama speak about the many accomplishments of his first year in office: passing equal pay for equal work, extending healthcare, and perhaps most importantly, helping to prevent another depression. He then told of the many challenges that remained: the need to create more jobs, finally revamping our healthcare system, and building an education system and a clean energy economy that will enable the US to continue to lead the world in the 21st century.
The conversation the President was having with us and with others joining online from around the country makes me confident in the future of his efforts, and of ours. Through Organizing for America and related efforts like Gen44, the President has and continues to engage communities across the country in the effort to address these challenges. The people are responding.
